Discussion RTX 4090 100% utilization in 2013 Crytek game? Am I interpreting that correctly and does that seem correct?
I never finished Ryse Son of Rome on Xbox but the game was fun and looked cool. I saw it on Steam so I bought it for my new PC. Settings were maxed out at native 4k. I was really surprised to see 100% utilization at 60 fps in this old of a title.
Is the Cryengine that intense and is that normal? I'm new to PC gaming by the way figuring this all out. I know Ideally you want 100% utilization on all your hardware but I was surprised because most the old gamez I've tried out barely use the 4090 or the CPU which is Ryzen 9 7900X.

Hardware It finally happened to me. Opened up my new 4070S to find a swapped out 6500 XT.
No, Amazon, I was not supposed to receive a $60 card in place of a $600 card. No idea how this happened considering the box was legitimately sealed and looked brand new. BUT I’m actually really pleased with how Amazon handled my customer service case.
I simply explained what happened to one of their chat associates, and within 15 minutes I had a full refund. This was huge. I truly thought Amazon was going to give me a hard time, make me return the 6500 XT and weight 30 days for a refund, if that. Nope. Sent 2 messages and had the full $600 back in my account the same day I opened the box. Maybe I got lucky? Either way this could be a blessing in disguise. Should I just send it on a 4080 Super?

Hardware Found this PC next to the trash.
My mind is blown on what I found. It wouldn't boot to bios at first. But after clearing the layer of dust on the gpu and cpu cooler (the image shown is after cleaning), it booted fine.
CPU: Intel 9900k
Cooler: Nactua D15
GPU: rtx 2070 tri
Power supply: Seasonic Prime TX-850, 80+ titanium
Mobo: MSI z390 A Pro.
RAM: Vengeance Pro 4000MHz 16gb
Along with some other stuff too.
Honestly most of the parts are better than what I have in my current system. Just crazy what people throw into the trash.

Hardware Talk me out of buying 40G of RAM just for using it as ramdisk
Exactly like the title said. I have 32G of DDR5, way more than enough for any and all purposes I need this computer for. This is not a server or anything, just a plain old gaming PC, and I never come close to maxing it out, even when doing ffmpeg while gaming.
However. NVidia... I love Shadowplay, but it writes every temp file to %TEMP%. There's constantly 10 or 20GB of temporary mp4 data in there (yes yes I know, I save 4K at around 150Mbps, overkill I know). I can't help but think I would love for it to be in a ramdisk instead of slowly killing my SSD, it's already at 84% health according to its SMART data after a year. I know it's not the most reliable but my secondary SSD is still at 100% after the same time, and I do use it a lot as well (doing a lot of compressions, re-encoding big files and so on).
I already know moving %TEMP% to ramdisk is not recommended, this is not what I want to do. I only plan to move specific apps like Shadowplay, OBS replay buffer, and so on. But seeing how big that data can be, and I want to be flexible with it, I'm wondering if I shouldn't get 40 or even 60G, just in case.
Is there something big I'm missing, like this won't work at all or be risky in some way ? Talk me out of it before I click on purchase. I need to eath this month.
EDIT : So. I forget how massive this sub is. I wasn't expecting this much answers so quickly. ^^' Thanks for all the info already mentionned, I've actually learned a few things.
EDIT 2 : For anyone joining a few hours in, here's a recap of what has been proposed so far. Know that I'm not in the US market, so I'm taking what you guys told me as face value, for the general idea. Also, I forgot to mention in the OP I'm on a AMD platform with a Lovelace GPU.
* Don't. Several reasons mentionned, such as stability issue, price, risk of losing data...
All of that are good points. But let's assume I get lucky and it's stable and the data being lost isn't important since it's only temporary mp4 files.
* Using a sacrifical SSD instead of the current one. I could buy a 1TB SSD, even of bad quality, and change it up every 4 or 5 years. Less pricey than buying $300 worth of RAM sticks.
My take : very true. Still not convinced going that route because I'm not sure I want to use up another NVMe slot with an SSD solely for that one purpose, but why not. I'm also hesitating because I'm wondering if I should instead take the cost once and for all and enjoying the extra RAM to do more stuff in general. Although it's also true that I'll end up upgrading the PC in around ten years or so, so... Not really an actual advantage for the RAM until I actually find something to do with it.
* Instead of a cheap SSD, use an Optane drive, without its caching features, as a durable SSD.
Could be the cheapest option, since Optane are quite small. It would only serve that purpose but be durable as hell. I hesitate for the same reasons above, but still a really good idea, and I like its out of the box aspect.
* Use an actual HDD. Practically unbeatable in durability, dirt cheap, can easily support the bandwith needed as long as there's not much random I/O in the meantime.
I really like this idea as well, and I actually did that for a while using a RAID0 I already have. I just don't like the sound it makes. (I know, I'm being very picky, but what's the fun otherwise ? :p ) I definitely recommand this to anyone having an old HDD laying around. Make sure it has sequential free space by defragmenting or reformating it.
* Use OBS Buffer, which stores everything in RAM already.
Another really good option. There's not much drawback, anything other than I'm being stubborn about the quality I want to save and I don't have RAM to store 20GB of buffer (while in a heavy game I mean). But again, it's really not a dumb alternative, I recommand it if you're not as stubborn as I am. Another advantage of OBS is that it's of course much more versatile and customizable than NVidia Shadowplay.
* Stop recording at 150Mbps
While nobody said so explicitely, I feel like I have to address that quickly. I know this is overkill, I'm not advising anyone to do it. I have the space for it and this is a personnal "demand" of mine. I've detailed my thought process somewhere on the thread, it would take a bit too much space to paste it here. TL;DR : I agree with you, just not the point.
* Use Adrenaline.
Well. OK sure if you buy me the GPU that goes with it lol.
* Remember your video in your brain then write it down with a hex editor
Nah I'm just messing with you, nobody went that far.
I may have forgotten something. There was a lot of discussions and I haven't been able to follow every single one of them. To anyone who has participated, thank you for all these ideas. No matter what I go through with, this has been a really enjoyable thought exercice. Most of you were civil about it and I hope it was in the same spirit. I don't know if I'll have the motivation to follow the threads if there's some activity again, but I appreciate every input.
