Clearly no one complaining about that event has ever touched apex legends overwatch at least has decent skins sometimes and unique stuff

Apex just sells shitty reskins for 200$

u/Apart-Tree8192 Apr 08 '24

Who give a rats donkey dick ass. These comments are stupid.

u/4n0th3rthr0waway Apr 06 '24

“When I came to you with those calculations, we thought we might start a chain reaction that would destroy the world.”

“What of it?”

“I believe we did.”

1

u/justforthis2024 Apr 06 '24

They only do it because we (not me though) buy it.

1

u/zellizion Apr 06 '24

The problem is that people keep giving these companies money for this stuff. I know if you are an adult you can do whatever you want with your money but the more you give for skins the less effort they put into making good games and more effort into "micro" transactions. Personally I want good games but you do you

1

u/No-Source40 Apr 05 '24

A MOBILE GAME (pg3d) I used to play is charging 32 dollars for 2 dollars worth of coins, a skin, and a gun.

u/Datuser14 Desktop Apr 05 '24

Valve making a flaming hat that now goes for $10,000 USD:

1

u/VieuxClou Apr 05 '24

I was here. I bought it. I was a fool. forgive my sin.

1

u/DisposableDroid47 Apr 05 '24

This is what's been blown entirely out of proportion.

$2.50 For Horse Skin = Microtransaction

$25.00 For NPC Shirt = Macrot4ansaction

These are not the same.

No shame, they made bad ass skins. I was sad to not see a maid one for players.

1

u/Meneth32 Apr 05 '24

The supply is infinite. Price is thus set only by demand.

1

u/D20IsHowIRoll Apr 05 '24

On the one hand I hate seeing this level of horrifying corporate greed.

On the other hand, I appreciate the absurd prices and limited buy window because it makes it very easy not to buy it. I can speak with my wallet and yes, there are enough whales out there drowning that voice out, but that also means I get to keep playing and getting new content for free.

Gotta huff the copium and find the silver linings in this capitalist hellscape we love in after all.

1

u/Mal_Dun PC Master Race Apr 05 '24

I only have a problem with pay2win systems.

With skins it's easy I simply don't buy that crap. I play Dota2 from time to time and never gave them any money for useless skins, and no it's not because I can; t afford it I only pay for real content.

1

u/Mattyf0601 Apr 05 '24

ah the future of gaming 😢 all i see in games these days are cosmetic packs and battle passes, bring back the days of 2-4 DLC packs per game

1

u/Reverentmalice Apr 05 '24

I bought that horse armor. I am part of the problem

1

Worst blunder in gaming for me. Greedy fucks and dogshit devs.

1

u/DaPlum Apr 05 '24

Yeah go check out the hearthstone shop. There is a 60 dollar "diamond card in there lmfao. I enjoy hearthstone but blizzard charges outrageous prices for cosmetics in their games i think D4 had a 30 dollar color pack for portals lol. It's actual insanity

1

u/Dundore77 Apr 05 '24

I love how steam/valve gets a pass yet they are the ones who made loot crates/mtx a thing with tf2

1

u/zeGermanGuy1 Apr 05 '24

In the latest MS Flight Sim you can buy virtual metal boxes for up to $90 (or even more, if I remember correctly). That's the price per plane you want to add, not a bundle or something.

1

u/Shigana Apr 05 '24

25$ for skins plus other items but let’s ignore that little detail. Skins themselves are 19$ each which is pretty much standard these says.

I like that OW2 is constantly being use to show how shitty monetization has become but people conveniently ignore other worse games like Valorant or Apex because it’s cool to shit on OW2.

You wanna know why shit like this keeps getting worse? Is because you people only follow internet trends to get some worthless Internet points.

1

u/beanmebaby Apr 05 '24

I think it's definitely possible to make a good F2P model, but almost no one does it well

1

u/Neapolitangargoyle Apr 05 '24

War Thunder, which ask you 70$ for a tank that's already in the game but slightly better.

(Hail the Snail)

1

u/BlackRoseXIII Apr 05 '24

Stop playing OW2. Just stop. I uninstalled when they announced the PvE was canceled. Sometimes I miss the gameplay, but you have to send a message.

1

u/Kuber2137 Apr 05 '24

1

u/PSneumn Apr 05 '24

I find it funny how overwatch gets shitted on the most for expensive cosmetics when valorant and csgo can have over $100 weapon skins.

Also overwatch is lowering the prices for cosmetics but i don't think it's going to affect event cosmetics like these sadly.

1

u/axelaxolotl Apr 05 '24

Worst thing is how bad they are. Normaly I would never criticise the art itself as the artists had no impact on its pricing, but this looks horrible. It looks like you got someone on fiver to do it. I cannot believe that this was done by the normal artists at blizzard this looks like a 50-100 dollar comission per character. This is so extremely sub par. Not even work by an intern should be this bad

I honestly believe if you buy a skin your money is better spent in the mega corps hands. That said I did buy the wu Tang bundle on fortnight, but not the full bundle, the budget bundle that just plays C.R.E.A.M. and does that wu Tang logo tag

1

u/MMetalRain Apr 05 '24

yet no one in their (or outside) community complain about it. every time i see this kind of post it like some1 outside pointing finger and start complaining something that no one care about.

u/ACupOfLatte Apr 05 '24

I just don't understand how we got here. The gaming community, the industry and the laws of the world had plenty of time to self regulate. And instead, here we are, with games offering $20+ cosmetics.

I understand, your money so you do with it as you wish. But come the fuck on, does it not make you even the least bit uncomfortable that the value proposition of 2 of those Overwatch skins is equal to some 10/10 games out there?

Does it not make you wonder, looking at the storefront, how 3 of those skins equate to more than an entire game like Elden Ring?

I've always thought that the line was already drawn, but time and time again I come to understand that the line was merely made out of chalk, and companies just scrub the line away and make a new one further on.

When I reach my older years, how far will the line be? How low can we go? Will I still be able to enjoy games without the feeling of getting fleeced, or will it be the norm that if I want to enjoy anything outside of the core gameplay, I'll have to pay more?

2

u/Helping_Stranger Apr 05 '24

Play overwatch, nostalgia for Cowboy bebop. Actually think the skins look decent.

With all that said, they can go fuck themselves for 25$ a skin

is that a cowboy beebop skin? i feel i need that.

1

u/Jelleyicious Apr 05 '24

Overwatch 2 is bad, but what happened to warcraft 3 is even worse. It should have been a slam dunk. Take one of the best strategy games ever made, freshen it up a little and give it a few quality of life improvements to bring it up to a modern standard.

2 or 3 of the 20 odd online matches I did just crashed to a black screen, multiple classic single player missions were fundamentally broken and no longer worked, the art style looks unappealing, they replaced and changed classic dying sounds so you no longer can listen to audio feedback when controlling a large fight, it runs really poorly and uses way more computer resources than it should, and last but not least has pretty much put a nail in the coffin of blizzard ever putting money into another rts.

Yes I'm still upset about it.

"Make it more expensive. Especially the non essential parts."

"Ah. Yes. Especially those parts."

1

u/ilmk9396 Apr 04 '24

If you care enough about skins to be bothered by the price you are part of the problem.

1

u/morithum Apr 04 '24

As long as some dumb shit buys it they will keep selling it.

1

u/JustHereForBDSM Apr 04 '24

Wait that's Overwatch 2's prices? Holy fuck what are they doing? Even Tekken's recent scummy as fuck cash shop and battle pass aren't that predatory.

1

u/Taikosound Apr 04 '24

I am teaching my boy about how nefarious microtransactions can be because he just started playing Fortnite and less than a day later he was already asking me if i could buy some, whatever their money is called so he could get, guess what? A fucking skin.

I have taken psychology of addiction courses during my master degree and i can tell you making the link between loot oriented games and slut machine was the easiest thing ever. I was playing Diablo 3 at the time and they use the exact same tricks to keep you invested in the game as they do on slot machines.

Time has past and the era of microtransactions and loot boxes just got worst and worst. Those assholes are praying on children to make money and i don't give a fuck that the parents should be policing the whole deal, it's just fucking wrong and disgusting.

1

u/Fat_bongus Apr 04 '24

I never played it but i think i remember a post with world of warcraft selling mount skins for 40$ each

1

u/TheOneWithThePorn12 Apr 04 '24

when they turned Overwatch 2 into a battlepass simulator i knew it was going to be shit.

At least with the constant stream of lootboxes i could play whenever i wanted and maybe sometimes gets something.

Fucking trash.

1

u/Yogurt_Ph1r3 Apr 04 '24

It's bad when companies charge a lot of money for cosmetics in a free to play game because uhhhhhhhhh

1

u/ToHerDarknessIGo Apr 04 '24

This ain't nothing compared to MS getting everyone to pay to play online with the internet connection they're already paying for.  A stroke of genius really.  Sony requiring a blood sacrifice of your first born child just to maybe get a refund is another one and people are okay with it.

Imma be honest, its all cuz of fortnite. The shitton of collabs other games have is exclusively because fortnite started doing collabs. And back in the day, most games had user created content with Arena shooters being known for models, skins, maps and mods.

I have always suspected that Arena Shooters were killed off so that studios could add microtransactions and lootboxes and other ways to bleed player's wallets.

So I don't play those games because I'm not made of money.

I think this was bound to happen. Someone had to be the first. What sucks is that "Whales" keep this shit going. Halo Infinite has a player base, but nothing near Halo 2/3 days. Yet they are still pushing $20+ skins as well. Who the fuck is buying them? People apparently are, and to the point that this business model wont change. I think its unfortunately here to stay until we end up with a "subscription to play Halo" - which it sounds like could be coming for the gaming world.

We can all still vote with our wallets. Hell Divers 2 literally give you premium currency in the game if you play and find it during missions.

If you play enough you can unlock most if not all the armor. This is second hand info so I am not aware of how much grind it would take but they didn’t make it sound ridiculous or anything.

We gotta stop playing and buying these games that just want to rip us off. We gotta start supporting devs that are pushing the industry out of this mtx hell scape. Especially, if the games isn’t free to play.

Overwatch was a really great game for its first 2 seasons, then it was a pretty good game for the next 2 seasons, a fun game for the next 2 seasons, etc... Literally only got worse as time went on, I can't imagine how bad it is since I left. I never spent a dollar on keys or chests or whatever, but I did go to a couple of OWL matches in Burbank (the old Nickelodeon Double Dare studio), which was really cool. I mean, the person who directed the horse armor want a low level employee. Probably a higher up producer or something who is proud of it and has it on his resume.

1

u/givemethebat1 Apr 04 '24

This is such a bad take. First of all, Overwatch is free to play. Oblivion was full price. You can literally play thousands of hours of Overwatch and get every gameplay feature without paying a single cent. The designers don’t owe you a fancy skin, they actually have to keep the servers on and the game running and they aren’t going to do it at a loss. It’s also being constantly updated and again, they aren’t doing it for free.

1

u/mudkripple Apr 04 '24

OW2 found out what the mobile games market has known for years: it's easier to catch 1 whale than 1000 minnows.

Once your game isn't popular enough to sustain itself off of game sales and many small microtransactions, there's nothing better to do than devote all resources towards creating more and more avenues for the few obsessively devoted players to spend money.

It rarely lasts long though. Whales stick around for a long time but not forever, and the number of whales almost never goes up from its first peak.

1

u/Hudre Apr 04 '24

Horse Armor was just the beginning...this is the result. We let this happen. Voting with your wallet was never going to work, these systems and social dynamics are too predatory.

me with a computer only able to play 10 year old games

1

u/OneWholeSoul Apr 04 '24

Overwatch is dead but it's having a very long, expensive funeral.

1

u/More_Coffees Apr 04 '24

It sucks when you play a game that has been around for a few years, like rocket league and people will tell you about how skins used to be cheaper, now they like $10 I think

1

u/Majestic_Mammoth729 Apr 04 '24

"Now I have become death"? OP plz

1

u/phro Apr 04 '24

Aren't there $1000+ skins in games like CS and Dota?

1

u/loudpaperclips Apr 04 '24

As long as it doesn't affect actual gameplay, I'm good. Charge whatever you want, I won't buy. I'm actually thankful there are chumps footing the bill of keeping the servers up for me. After all, I could be paying for Dota. I could be subscribing, even. But I'm not because someone can't handle not having the pink dildo dress for Pudge. Who am I to judge?

1

u/unrealistic-potato Apr 04 '24

Can people with throw away money please stop buying skins your killing the gaming community in ways that I feel only the people barley getting by can see

1

u/Sr_DingDong Apr 04 '24

To play Devils Advocate.... they don't stop the fun, they're optional skins that do nothing.

1

u/N7_Voidwalker Apr 04 '24

Well….fuck that guy, he tainted the future

1

u/rexcannon Apr 04 '24

Valve broke the barrier. Not Bethesda.

Last Epoch and Path of Exile say hi.

even DIablo IV's not THAT expensive Microtransaction wise.

The culture in publicly traded tech companies is just broken at every level.

But can we take a moment to appreciate again how great Fallout New Vegas was by comparison? Four DLC that were basically expansion packs, each for only $10.

1

u/Any_Secretary_4925 i cant even run half-life smoothly Apr 04 '24

them doing the horse armor shit or not, it still wouldve happened. stop acting like bethesda was the whole reason this started lol

1

u/Babayaga20000 Specs/Imgur Here Apr 04 '24

To be fair, it was really inevitable

someone would have done it sooner or later

just like the atomic bomb

1

u/AlphaStonkApe Apr 04 '24

Don't play the game y'all. Even if you're not spending money on a game. We used to vote with our wallets. Now we must vote with our time.

1

u/Flat-Shallot3992 Apr 04 '24

25 dollars for as skin is pretty cheap compared to Pokemon Unite

1

u/No_Construction_6486 Apr 04 '24

I have zero sympathy for people who still buy Bethesda games.

1

u/Aoiboshi Apr 04 '24

Who was that employee and can we ostracize them from society

Why would Microsoft have convinced Bethesda to do anything in 2006?

1

u/Alohoe Apr 04 '24

Copying test answers from Diablo 4 I see.

1

u/NotoriousD4C Apr 04 '24

$100 for Cowboy Bebop skins

or $40 for the Blu-ray?

1

u/lostnumber08 PC Master Race Apr 04 '24

Don’t play the game. Don’t buy the skin. EZPZ.

1

u/Accurate-Degree836 Apr 04 '24

£20 skins are absolutely nuts, do you know how many complete games I've spent £20 (or less) on??

1

u/Hyperrustynail Apr 04 '24

Jet really let himself go.

1

u/Fostrof08 Apr 04 '24

War thunder making 75$ vehicles, Fortnite or COD making Skins that you must pay 80$ for (because you need to have bought multiple passes or bundles first) in order to obtain:

1

u/CadaverCaliente Apr 04 '24

That's why PUBG is king, you unlock pieces of outfits and you can customize your drip and shows off during the queue

1

u/npcinyourbagoholding Apr 04 '24

Can someone help me understand the problem here? If you don't want to buy a cosmetic.. don't buy it. I know I'm about to get downvote fucked but I just don't get it. Its the same with an overly expensive phone or car or t-shirt. No one's pissed off that there are $100+ tshirts for sale?

1

u/SoCuteShibe 4090 FE | 13700K | 64GB D5-4800 Apr 04 '24

Do people actually buy >=$20 skins?

I am far from broke and I just stop playing games when I see them pulling that shit. Who wants to look at disgusting greed when they are trying to chill and have a good time? Who wants to support any company so disgustingly greedy in any form?

1

u/Psychadelico Apr 04 '24

So much respect and love for the individual devs at Blizzard. Overwatch was and is an amazing game. That said, fuck Blizzard, fuck this game and, to everyone who's spending money on this shit, please do reconsider and reflecr on what you're spending your money on

1

u/ivan-ent Apr 04 '24

Payed skins make 0 sense outside of the steam marketplace imo ,atleast on steam you can sell them for a game or even cash out with a 3rd party some day if u want

1

u/laggyteabag Ryzen 7600X | RTX 3080 | 32GB RAM Apr 04 '24

It is kinda funny that the horse armour was so poorly received that is basically became a meme, but nowadays it would be considered a bargain relative to modern microtransactions.

1

u/HyperLethalNoble6 Apr 04 '24

Tbh 2.50 was alot of money back then...

1

u/gnappyassassin Apr 04 '24

There are free things in Halo Infinite Weekly, and free skins in The Finals with every event, but finding drip tied to achievements like those two and Sea Of Thieves.

1

u/supremedalek925 Ryzen 9 5900x | RTX 4080 | 32 GB RAM Apr 04 '24

Can we go back to when $5 cosmetic items were considered a horribly greedy, vehemently fought against monetization option? Seeing people defend things like $60 season passes has me feeling depressed.

1

u/Useless-RedCircle Apr 04 '24

$25 per skin that was free not to long ago and promised it wouldn’t be paid for. Fuck blizzard scum

1

u/rainliege Apr 04 '24

Are the people complaining the same that are buying?

1

u/SalemWolf 1660ti Apr 04 '24

In a first person game no less. You don’t even see your skin most of the time. Other people do but who cares what they see.

1

u/TensaStrider Apr 04 '24

I play Overwatch, Valorant, Apex Legends, dabbled in the latest Call of Duty. Yea they all do this shit it's not just Overwatch. And yes it is bad, and yes, I also miss the Overwatch 1 days, but it's a bit nitpicky to this one game.

5

u/Seaguard5 Apr 04 '24

Then don’t buy it.

What don’t you understand about that?

If imbeciles still buy this bull shit then they will keep selling it.

1

u/Shajirr Apr 04 '24

If imbeciles still buy this bull shit then they will keep selling it.

The problem is that new generation grows up with this being the norm.
They won't see it as horsehit, since it was always like this for them.
The more widespread bullshit becomes, the more normalised it gets over time.

We already have plenty of people that only ever played predatory F2P mobile games, to whom paying for a game upfront is an entirely alien idea.

0

u/Seaguard5 Apr 04 '24

That is a good point.

We need to advocate and inform more, then. About the good old days of gaming.

When you bought a game, owned it, didn’t get updates on it (because you didn’t need to), and it was fucking amazing.

1

u/SirDaveWolf i9 9900k | Asus RTX 3090 ROG Strix OC | 32 GB G.Skill Trident Z Apr 04 '24

Tencent‘s influence. Same for Diablo 4. But as long as the people keep paying and supporting the CCP, it’s working well and no need to change anything.

1

u/poisonfoxxxx Apr 04 '24

The worst part about the skins and crap is that there is absolutely no honor in owning something that can be bought. It has just further added to the “what’s the point” narrative the world is now following.

2

u/Queef-Elizabeth Apr 04 '24

People who dismiss it as just cosmetics or saying 'you don't need cosmetics to play the game' completely miss the point of the problem.

1

u/SologdinSecret Apr 04 '24

Well, most people want "free" games nowadays. That's the direct result.

1

u/CockroachGreedy6576 Apr 04 '24

Just don't buy it. If it gets no sales, it will stop being a thing.

1

u/Faldartuum Apr 04 '24

When CS:GO 2 came out, I just sold for 150$ worth of f2p skins I got on CS:GO 1, 1 SSG Sand Dunes Pristine condition for 80$ (bought it for 0.25$ back then but actually free from selling lootboxes).

Who tf buys a Sand Dunes SSG without stattrack and nametag for 80$ ?! Some Chinese guy apparently ...
